The track was released as a single in 1977 and reached number 11 on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_charts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Billboard<\/em>&nbsp;chart<\/a>&nbsp;in 1978 and number eight on the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cashbox_(magazine)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cash Box<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;chart.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-billboard-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;With a chart run of 19 weeks, &#8220;Peg&#8221; is tied with &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rikki_Don&#039;t_Lose_That_Number\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rikki Don&#8217;t Lose That Number<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hey_Nineteen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hey Nineteen<\/a>&#8221; for being Steely Dan&#8217;s longest-running chart hit. In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada<\/a>, &#8220;Peg&#8221; spent three weeks at number seven in March 1978.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-collectionscanada.gc.ca-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Music_and_lyrics\">Music and lyrics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mwKA\">&#8220;Peg&#8221; has been described by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AllMusic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AllMusic<\/a>&nbsp;critic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Thomas_Erlewine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Thomas Erlewine<\/a>&nbsp;as a &#8220;sunny pop&#8221; song with &#8220;layers of jazzy vocal harmonies&#8221;,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;while music scholar Stephen K. Valdez said it features a fusion of jazz and rock elements.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In the opinion of jazz musician and academic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andy_LaVerne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy LaVerne<\/a>, the song &#8220;has the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blues<\/a>&nbsp;at its core, though it might not be apparent at first listen&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mwOQ\">The song&#8217;s guitar solo was attempted by seven top studio session guitarists\u2014including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robben_Ford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robben Ford<\/a>&nbsp;and recurring guitarist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larry_Carlton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Carlton<\/a>\u2014before&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jay_Graydon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jay Graydon<\/a>&#8216;s version became the &#8220;keeper&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-:0-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[9]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;For the first hour of the session Graydon played what he called &#8220;my &#8216;dig me&#8217; jazz-pop stuff&#8221;, but then Fagen directed him to try more of a blues approach. Graydon felt he could not play in a blues style over the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_seventh_chord\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C major 7 chord<\/a>&nbsp;used in the song, but turned to a blues approach whenever the chord changed to G2 over B.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-RiveGrayint-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[10]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He worked on the song for about six hours before the band was satisfied.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-Newsweek_oral_history-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[11]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;According to Graydon, at the end of the session they gave no indication of whether or not they liked the solo enough to use it, and he did not find out it was on the record until he heard the song played on the radio.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-RiveGrayint-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mwTg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_McDonald_(singer)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael McDonald<\/a>&nbsp;provides multi-tracked backup vocals in the choruses, and keyboardist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Griffin_(musician)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul Griffin<\/a>&nbsp;can be heard talking and improvising background vocals in the final chorus and fadeout.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-Aja_DVD-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mwVQ\">Although there was speculation that the name was a reference to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Broadway_theatre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Broadway<\/a>&nbsp;star and one-time&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hollywood_(film_industry)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood<\/a>&nbsp;actress&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_Entwistle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peg Entwistle<\/a>, in 2000 the band said the song was written about a real person but not Entwistle.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[13]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In 2020,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Fagen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Fagen<\/a>&nbsp;said &#8220;There&#8217;s no hidden meaning. We just wanted a dotted half note for that spot, and &#8216;Peg&#8217; was short enough to fit with the music.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-newsFagen-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[14]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Fagen added that the song &#8220;takes place at a seedy photo shoot in L.A&#8230;from the perspective of [a] jilted boyfriend.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-newsFagen-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[14]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Legacy\">Legacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mwZw\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_(magazine)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Billboard<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;praised the &#8220;sarcastic&#8221; lyrics, the &#8220;stinging instrumental break&#8221; and the &#8220;chilling&#8221; piano playing.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[15]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cash_Box\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cash Box<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;wrote, &#8220;this snappy number has the beat and the harmonic hooks to capture that extra top 40 momentum.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-cb-16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[16]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Record_World\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Record World<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;called it &#8220;a pop-rock love song, crafted with [Steely Dan&#8217;s] usual perfectionism and flair.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-rw-17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[17]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mweg\">Pitchfork rated &#8220;Peg&#8221; as its 87th best song of the 1970s, describing it as the &#8220;perfect Steely Dan song, and one of the strangest hits to ever grace the mainstream.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-:0-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[9]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Drummer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Marotta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rick Marotta<\/a>&nbsp;called &#8220;Peg&#8221; one of the greatest tracks he has ever played on.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[18]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In 2017, Dan Weiss of&nbsp;<em>Billboard<\/em>&nbsp;ranked the song third on his list of the top 15 Steely Dan songs,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[19]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and in 2020, Phil Freeman of&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stereogum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stereogum<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;ranked the song second on his list of the top 10 Steely Dan songs.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[20]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mwjw\">The song was the theme music for a celebrity paparazzi segment by the syndicated news magazine&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Entertainment_Tonight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Entertainment Tonight<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;from 1981 to 1985.<sup>[<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citation_needed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mwlA\">&#8220;Peg&#8221; was heavily&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sampling_(music)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sampled<\/a>&nbsp;on the 1989&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_La_Soul\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">De La Soul<\/a>&nbsp;song &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eye_Know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eye Know<\/a>&#8220;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peg_(song)#cite_note-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[21]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It was covered by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nerina_Pallot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nerina Pallot<\/a>&nbsp;in 2007 and in 2014
