It appeared on the Lovin&#8217; Spoonful&#8217;s 1967 soundtrack album&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/You%27re_a_Big_Boy_Now_(album)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You&#8217;re a Big Boy Now<\/a><\/em>. Sebastian performed his composition at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Woodstock_Music_%26_Art_Fair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Woodstock<\/a>; it was the fourth song out of the five he performed at the 1969 music festival in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_Lake,_Sullivan_County,_New_York\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White Lake, New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Writing_and_recording\">Writing and recording<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Coppola commissioned Sebastian to write music for the film, and for one scene wanted a song with a similar mood and tempo to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monday,_Monday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monday, Monday<\/a>&#8221; by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Mamas_and_the_Papas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Mamas and the Papas<\/a>. Sebastian said that he wrote the song as &#8220;pleas for a partner to spend a few minutes talking before leaving&#8230;. [but] you never knew if the other person was actually there listening or was already gone&#8221;. Coppola approved the song, and it was recorded by the band but with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Session_musician\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">session musician<\/a>&nbsp;Billy LaVorgna rather than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Butler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Butler<\/a>&nbsp;on drums. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arrangement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrangement<\/a>&nbsp;was by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artie_Schroeck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artie Schroeck<\/a>. After the recording was completed and the musicians left, the producer,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Erik_Jacobsen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Erik Jacobsen<\/a>, discovered that an engineer had mistakenly erased Sebastian&#8217;s vocal track, so he had to re-record it the next day. Sebastian said: &#8220;What you hear on the record is me, a half hour after learning that my original vocal track had been erased. You can even hear my voice quiver a little at the end. That was me thinking about the vocal we lost and wanting to kill someone.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darling_Be_Home_Soon#cite_note-FOOTNOTEMyers201772%E2%80%9379-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It has been described as &#8220;&#8230;one of the most heartfelt songs about being away from a loved one, written from the point of view of a musician on the road writing a letter.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darling_Be_Home_Soon#cite_note-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_(magazine)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Billboard<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;described the song as a &#8220;medium-paced rock ballad given that &#8216;extra special&#8217; Lovin&#8217; Spoonful treatment&#8221; and should be a &#8220;smash&#8221; on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_Hot_100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Billboard<\/em>&nbsp;Hot 100<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darling_Be_Home_Soon#cite_note-bb-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The critic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Goldstein_(writer,_born_1944)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Goldstein<\/a>, one of the earliest champions of the Spoonful,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darling_Be_Home_Soon#cite_note-FOOTNOTEHeylin2007205-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;criticized the song as the band&#8217;s first disappointing single.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darling_Be_Home_Soon#cite_note-Goldstein-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In his review for&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Village_Voice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Village Voice<\/a><\/em>, he disparaged the song as a tribute to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Dylan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bob Dylan<\/a>&nbsp;which &#8220;lacks the master&#8217;s raunchiness&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darling_Be_Home_Soon#cite_note-Goldstein-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Beatles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Beatles<\/a>&nbsp;regularly praised the Spoonful in interviews,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darling_Be_Home_Soon#cite_note-FOOTNOTETurner2017261-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[9]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;but when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_McCartney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul McCartney<\/a>&nbsp;reviewed the latest singles for&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melody_Maker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melody Maker<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;in February 1967,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darling_Be_Home_Soon#cite_note-FOOTNOTEHjort2008121-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[10]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;he criticized &#8220;Darling Be Home Soon&#8221;
