Always liked it.  Finally got to record it.  Pretty funny, being a New England guy, I automatically saved it as Dunkin.  Doh!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Update! It was the third and final single from his second&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Simon_(album)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-titled studio album<\/a>&nbsp;(1972), released on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbia_Records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Columbia Records<\/a>&nbsp;in July 1972 backed with &#8220;Run That Body Down&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duncan_(Paul_Simon_song)#cite_note-grd-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The song peaked at No. 52 on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_Hot_100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Billboard Pop Singles<\/a>&nbsp;chart in 1972.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duncan_(Paul_Simon_song)#cite_note-amg-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duncan_(Paul_Simon_song)#cite_note-jackson-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A ballad in E-minor, &#8220;Duncan&#8221; tells the story of Lincoln Duncan, a fisherman&#8217;s son. An inability to fall asleep in a cheap motel due to the loud sex that a couple is having next door sends Duncan off on a long reverie. He recalls his decision to leave &#8220;the boredom and the chowder&#8221; of his hometown in the Canadian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Maritimes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maritime Provinces<\/a>&nbsp;and head towards&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England<\/a>. He recalls running out of money, losing his confidence and faith in himself, and gaining them back after losing his virginity to a young female&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Street_preacher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">street preacher<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 &#8220;just like a dog I was befriended&#8221;. In the last stanza, he is lying on the ground at night playing his guitar and thanking God for his fingers. Between the stanzas, the song features instrumental interludes, played on 2 flutes, by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Incas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Incas<\/a>, an Andean group which had previously collaborated with Simon &amp; Garfunkel on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/El_Condor_Pasa_(If_I_Could)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Condor Pasa (If I Could)<\/a>&#8221; in 1970.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duncan_(Paul_Simon_song)#cite_note-bennighof-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duncan_(Paul_Simon_song)#cite_note-jackson-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cash_Box\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cash Box<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;said that &#8220;the instrumental&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bridge_(music)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bridge<\/a>&nbsp;is straight out of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pied_Piper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pied Piper<\/a>&nbsp;mystique.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duncan_(Paul_Simon_song)#cite_note-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Record_World\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Record World<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;felt it was &#8220;slightly more subdued&#8221; than the first two singles from the album.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duncan_(Paul_Simon_song)#cite_note-rw-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Live_performances\">Live performances<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A concert rendition featuring&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urubamba_(group)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Urubamba<\/a>&nbsp;performing the interludes was included on the 1974 album&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Simon_in_Concert:_Live_Rhymin%27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul Simon in Concert: Live Rhymin&#8217;<\/a><\/em>. It gained radio airplay itself, and has gone on to become a semi-regular on satellite radio&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deep_Tracks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deep Tracks<\/a>&nbsp;station.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duncan_(Paul_Simon_song)#cite_note-fitz-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Simon has included the song in his set lists for some subsequent tours as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a show in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toronto<\/a>&nbsp;on May 7, 2011, Rayna Ford, a fan from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conception_Bay,_Newfoundland_and_Labrador\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conception Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador<\/a>, called out for Simon to play the song, and said something to the effect that she learned to play guitar on the song.
