Sung by Doug Cross who unfortunately is no longer with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.baselines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/all-songs\/mp3\/All_I_Gotta_Do_2025.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1021\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/baselines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/All-I-Gotta-Do-1021x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baselines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/All-I-Gotta-Do-1021x1024.jpg 1021w, https:\/\/baselines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/All-I-Gotta-Do-897x900.jpg 897w, https:\/\/baselines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/All-I-Gotta-Do-768x770.jpg 768w, https:\/\/baselines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/All-I-Gotta-Do-638x640.jpg 638w, https:\/\/baselines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/All-I-Gotta-Do-440x440.jpg 440w, https:\/\/baselines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/All-I-Gotta-Do-1034x1037.jpg 1034w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1021px) 100vw, 1021px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>All I&#8217;ve Got to Do<\/strong>&#8221; is a song written by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Lennon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Lennon<\/a>\u00a0(credited to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lennon%E2%80%93McCartney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lennon\u2013McCartney<\/a>) and performed by the English rock band\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Beatles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Beatles<\/a>\u00a0on their second British album,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/With_the_Beatles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">With the Beatles<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1963).\u00a0In the United States, &#8220;All I&#8217;ve Got to Do&#8221; originally appeared on\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meet_the_Beatles!\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet the Beatles!<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1964).\u00a0According to Dennis Alstrand, the song is the first time in rock and roll or rock music in which the bass player plays chords as a vital part of the song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Inspiration\">Inspiration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lennon said he was &#8220;trying to do\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smokey_Robinson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smokey Robinson<\/a>\u00a0again,&#8221;\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ian_MacDonald\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ian MacDonald<\/a>\u00a0compared it to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/(You_Can)_Depend_on_Me\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(You Can) Depend on Me<\/a>&#8221; by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Miracles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Miracles<\/a>, both musically and lyrically.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richie_Unterberger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richie Unterberger<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AllMusic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AllMusic<\/a>\u00a0said it sounds like Robinson but also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_Alexander\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arthur Alexander<\/a>.\u00a0Beatles biographer Bob Spitz said the song is &#8220;restlessly dark and moody&#8221;, and compared it to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Shirelles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Shirelles<\/a>&#8216; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baby_It%27s_You\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baby It&#8217;s You<\/a>&#8221; (a song the Beatles previously covered) and early\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Drifters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drifters<\/a>\u00a0recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was one of three songs Lennon was the principal writer for on\u00a0<em>With the Beatles<\/em>, with &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/It_Won%27t_Be_Long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It Won&#8217;t Be Long<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Not_a_Second_Time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Not a Second Time<\/a>&#8220;.\u00a0Lennon said that it was written specifically for the American market, because the idea of calling a girl on the telephone was unthinkable to a British youth in the early 1960s. For instance, Lennon said in an interview regarding &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/No_Reply_(song)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No Reply<\/a>&#8220;: &#8220;I had the image of walking down the street and seeing her silhouetted in the window and not answering the &#8216;phone, although I have never called a girl on the &#8216;phone in my life! Because &#8216;phones weren&#8217;t part of the English child&#8217;s life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Recording\">Recording<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The band recorded the song in a single recording session on 11 September 1963 in 14\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Take\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">takes<\/a>\u00a0with one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Overdubbing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overdub<\/a>, take 15. The master take was take 15.<sup> <\/sup>It was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Audio_mixing_(recorded_music)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mixed<\/a>\u00a0for mono on 30 September and for stereo on 29 October.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All_I%27ve_Got_to_Do#cite_note-FOOTNOTELewisohn198836,_37-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[15]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although music journalist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Turner_(writer)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steve Turner<\/a>\u00a0claims the song was written in 1961,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All_I%27ve_Got_to_Do#cite_note-FOOTNOTETurner200535-16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[16]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0MacDonald said the song was never in the Beatles&#8217; live repertoire, which explains why 8 of the 14 takes were incomplete: the band was unfamiliar with the song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Release\">Release<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the UK, &#8220;All I&#8217;ve Got to Do&#8221; was released on\u00a0<em>With the Beatles<\/em>\u00a0which also includes the Beatles&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cover_version\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cover<\/a>\u00a0of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/You_Really_Got_a_Hold_on_Me\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You Really Got a Hold on Me<\/a>&#8221; by the Miracles,\u00a0the most direct connection between the album and Robinson&#8217;s music.
