In 2000, a cover by English band&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toploader\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toploader<\/a>&nbsp;became a worldwide hit and achieved multi-platinum status in the United Kingdom. A version by Swedish EDM duo&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jub%C3%ABl_(duo)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jub\u00ebl<\/a>, released in 2018, was a hit in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sherman Kelly wrote the song in 1969.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dancing_in_the_Moonlight#cite_note-Song-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;While recovering from a vicious assault by a gang, he &#8220;envisioned an alternate reality, the dream of a peaceful and joyful celebration of life.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dancing_in_the_Moonlight#cite_note-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Kelly wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>On a trip to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Croix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Croix<\/a>&nbsp;in 1969, I was the first victim of a vicious St. Croix gang who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fountain_Valley_massacre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eventually murdered 8 American tourists<\/a>. At that time, I suffered multiple facial fractures and wounds and was left for dead. While I was recovering, I wrote &#8220;Dancin in the Moonlight&#8221; in which I envisioned an alternate reality, the dream of a peaceful and joyful celebration of life. The song became a huge hit and was recorded by many musicians worldwide. &#8220;Dancin In The Moonlight&#8221; continues to be popular to this day.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dancing_in_the_Moonlight#cite_note-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He recorded it singing lead with his band Boffalongo, who were active from 1968 to 1971; they included it on their album&nbsp;<em>Beyond Your Head<\/em>&nbsp;and it was their final single. The song was also recorded by High Broom and released in 1970 on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Island_Records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Island Records<\/a>. King Harvest recorded and released &#8220;Dancing in the Moonlight,&#8221; featuring a prominent keyboard countermelody, as a single with &#8220;Lady, Come On Home&#8221; on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/B-side\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B-side<\/a>&nbsp;in 1972. Steve Cutler, a jazz drummer from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York City<\/a>&nbsp;(standing on the base of the pole in the cover picture), played drums on the tracks and toured France and the UK with the band. The group disbanded after six months and the single languished for a year until it was bought and released worldwide by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perception_Records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Perception Records<\/a>. In Canada, the song reached number 5 on the weekly charts and number 71 on the year-end chart for 1973. It peaked at number 13 on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_Hot_100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Billboard<\/em>&nbsp;Hot 100<\/a>&nbsp;in the United States during the weeks of February 24 and March 3, 1973.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dancing_in_the_Moonlight#cite_note-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a
