Credited to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lennon%E2%80%93McCartney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lennon\u2013McCartney<\/a>, the song was written solely by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_McCartney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul McCartney<\/a>&nbsp;inspired in title only by his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_English_Sheepdog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old English Sheepdog<\/a>, Martha. The song&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Modulation_(music)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">modulates<\/a>&nbsp;through several&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Key_(music)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keys<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martha_My_Dear#cite_note-FOOTNOTEPollack1995-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The song is notated mainly in the key of E\u266d&nbsp;major,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martha_My_Dear#cite_note-sheet-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;showing up embellished chords with jazzy sprinkled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Consonance_and_dissonance#Dissonance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dissonances<\/a>. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Song_structure_(popular_music)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">verse<\/a>&nbsp;is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syncopation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">syncopated<\/a>&nbsp;replicate of the first melodic section adding two extra beats, a technique similar to that used later by McCartney in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Two_of_Us_(The_Beatles_song)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Two of Us<\/a>&#8220;. Though the bridge is in the key of F major, the manner in which it abruptly sets in and exits makes it sound more out-of-the-way than it really is.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martha_My_Dear#cite_note-FOOTNOTEPollack1995-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recording<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Beatles biographers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ian_MacDonald\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ian MacDonald<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Lewisohn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Lewisohn<\/a>, &#8220;Martha My Dear&#8221; is one of the few songs by the band in which McCartney played all the instruments (except orchestral instruments played by session musicians). Such a scenario was increasingly common for him during the height of the tensions that marred the sessions for the album. Although&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Harrison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Harrison<\/a>&nbsp;is known to have recorded a portion of the electric guitar on the final recording, he was not credited.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martha_My_Dear#cite_note-auto-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The song was recorded over two days on 4 and 5 October 1968 at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trident_Studios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trident Studios<\/a>&nbsp;in London.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martha_My_Dear#cite_note-FOOTNOTELewisohn1988159-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;McCartney recorded the piano, drums and vocals on the first day. He was advised to have producer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Martin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Martin<\/a>&nbsp;play the piano solo because it was believed that the solo was beyond McCartney&#8217;s competency, but McCartney persisted. Martin&#8217;s brass and string arrangements were overdubbed later that day. On 5 October, McCartney re-recorded his vocals, added handclaps, and overdubbed bass and guitar parts, completing the song that day.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martha_My_Dear#cite_note-FOOTNOTELewisohn1988159-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Legacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of its release, Jacob Stolworthy of&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Independent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Independent<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;listed &#8220;Martha My Dear&#8221; at number 20 in his ranking of the White Album&#8217;s 30 tracks.
